Winter Newsletter - House of Yoga

Published: November 11, 2009

Welcome to the long-awaited winter newsletter brought to you from the House of Yoga.  This quarterly update is designed to remind you of the benefits of yoga practice and to ask you to support the House of Yoga by spreading the word.

Find out about our special 2-for-1 Christmas offer, get 35% off the House of Yoga’s very own relaxation CD, plus, read all about the experience of a group of Dutch ladies who enjoyed a weekend retreat at the House of Yoga last month.

NEWS JUST IN…

New classes

To cope with increased demand, the House of Yoga has now added two daytime sessions on Tuesdays at 9.30am and 1pm and a Pregnancy Yoga class on Wednesday 7pm in addition to existing evening classes on Mondays and Tuesdays at 6pm and Wednesdays at 5.30pm and a Pregnancy Yoga class at 7pm on Wednesday.

2-for-1 Christmas Offer!

Book your yoga weekend before 25 December and your partner goes FREE! (Offer based on two people sharing).

Don’t forget, as there are never more than six participants at a time, weekends can be tailor-made to suit your needs. Read the feedback from the group of Dutch ladies who attended a retreat last month to gauge what you might get out of it.

And if you wanted to extend your stay beyond the weekend to explore the beauty of the Devon coastline and countryside, the House of Yoga can also offer a B&B facility on request.

The gift of relaxation

Stuck for ideas for what to buy your loved ones this Christmas? Why not give the gift of the House of Yoga relaxation CD – Release Your Mind, Shape Your Destiny! – which is now available at the reduced price of £9.99 inclusive of P&P. (link)

At 35% off, it’s excellent value and the perfect stocking filler.

Weekend retreat dates

Once the excesses of the festive season are over, many of us make New Year’s resolutions to get back in shape. To help you to achieve your goals, the House of Yoga is holding weekend retreats on the following dates in 2010:

15-17 January      All abilities
29-31 January     Beginners
12-14 February    All abilities
26-28 February   Beginners

While the House of Yoga aims to offer two weekend retreats per month, if you have a different date in mind, don’t hesitate to call as we aim to be flexible.

Yoga – What’s in it for you?

Substantial research has been carried out on the benefits of yoga at a physiological, psychological and biochemical level. Although the studies tend to be based on small numbers of people, there are lots of them and, in addition, we cannot ignore the wealth of anecdotal evidence. The studies look at the benefits of yoga postures (asanas), breathing (Pranayama), relaxation and meditation.  No doubt many of you who have practised yoga will recognise some of the benefits outlined below.

Physiological benefits

Many bodily functions stabilise, normalise or improve through yoga: e.g. the autonomic nervous system stabilises; cardiovascular and respiratory efficiency increase; gastrointestinal and endocrine functions normalise and the excretory function improves.

To break it down, here’s what yoga can do for you physically:

  • Increase musculoskeletal flexibility, range of motion in joints, strength and resilience

  • Improves your posture and balance

  • Gives you a stronger grip and eye-hand coordination, dexterity and reaction time improves

  • Increases energy levels and endurance

  • Normalises your weight

  • Improves sleep

  • Increases your level of immunity

  • Lessens pain

Psychological benefits

  • Moods improves and subjective wellbeing increases

  • Self-acceptance and self-actualisation increase

  • Enhanced social adjustment

  • Greater levels of concentration

  • Sharper memory

  • Better attention span

  • Heightened learning efficiency

  • Anxiety and depression diminish

  • Hostility lessens

On a biochemical level

While there are numerous benefits, I just want to mention the two most significant:

  • Exercise and relaxation trigger the release of endorphins (the body’s powerful natural painkillers)

  • Cortisol levels fall drastically during relaxation, thus reducing stress levels.

As ever, please feel free to share this newsletter by passing it on to family and friends.  Any feedback you may have is most welcome and, remember, I am always available to give help and advice – just drop me a line.

So, until the next newsletter in the New Year, have a very peaceful and stress-free festive season.

Sibylla

Director of the House of Yoga
